They start up here, in the North of the country, and go all the way down to the Algarve. Of the more than 100 river beaches that exist in Portugal, where tranquility and fresh air reign, I decided to highlight only 10 places where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, with family, friends or even alone.
These are just some of the most beautiful river beaches in the country that you really have to visit:
1 – River Beach of Lomba, in Gondomar…
In the municipality of Gondomar, Praia Fluvial da Lomba is located on the left bank of the river Douro, near the town of Lomba. It has an extensive sandy beach, plenty of green areas and support for all vacationers who, at this time of year, take advantage of the northern waters to bathe.
Next to the beach you will find a small picnic area and everything you need to spend a whole day here, from morning until night.
2 – River Beach of Rabaçal, in Valpaços…
It is one of the most secret places in Trás-os-Montes in the northern part of the country and, in summer, it is visited by those who enjoy canoeing, fishing or spending a good time away from the cities.
The sand is considerably large, taking into account this type of beaches, and is perfectly framed in nature, with many trees and small spots to capture the funniest photographs of this summer.
3 – Loriga River Beach, in Seia…
Still in the North of the country, near Serra da Estrela, you will find one of my favorite river beaches: Loriga, one of the finalists of the “7 Wonders – Prais de Portugal”, in the river beaches category.
The setting, as you can imagine, is idyllic, with breathtaking landscapes. The water, well, prepare to freeze, or this beach was not in a glacial valley.
4 – Alamal River Beach, in Gavião…
Just for the scenery it offers, it's worth walking the narrow and winding road that leads there. The surrounding vegetation, but especially the Belver Castle, on the other side of the Tagus, on the top of the slope, invite you to enjoy the views before taking a dip.
Although much sought after in the warmer months, the extensive sandy beach (compared to other river beaches) and grassy areas have space for everyone. If you go there, be sure to also walk along the wooden walkway by the river.
5 – Pego do Fundo River Beach, in Alcoutim…
If you are in the Algarve or planning to go there, this beach is a “must”. It is fed by the Cadavais stream and has a series of infrastructures prepared for all vacationers.
It stands out for the vast vegetation around the beach and also for the picnic area, bar, garden and area reserved for recreational and sporting activities.
6 – Lago Azul, in Ferreira do Zêzere…
Officially it's called Praia Fluvial da Castanheira, but everyone knows it as Lago Azul, thanks to the inn with the same name next door. Right in the middle of the Castelo de Bode dam, there is a floating platform with two swimming pools (one for adults and one for children) that invites you to take a dip in the waters of the river Zêzere.
This area is also very popular with wakeboard lovers, but if you're looking for something quieter, you can always take pedalo rides or take walks on the trails that surround the dam.
7 – Olhos de Água, in Alcanena…
This river beach owes its name to the source of the Alviela river, which rises to the surface a few meters higher with clear, fresh waters. Although it delights children and adults, it is particularly appreciated by the younger ones because, here, they can have a foot and see the bottom.
It is part of a pleasant leisure area, with picnic areas, a children's playground and even a campsite. Other must-see attractions nearby are the Alviela Living Science Center and the Gruta da Canada, inhabited by thousands and thousands of bats.
8 – River Beach of Fraga da Pegada, in Macedo de Cavaleiros…
Far from the capital, in Bragança, you can find one of the river beaches with the most Blue Flags in Europe and, be amazed, with an average water temperature of 22ºC.
The practice of water sports such as windsurfing is very common for those who choose this place to spend their summer holidays.
9 – Fluvial Beach of Fragas de São Simão, in Figueiró dos Vinhos…
As part of the Network of Schist Villages Program, the pedestrian access to this beach – through walkways – is one of the most exciting and beautiful on this list.
The waters are clear and the Serra da Lousã does the rest, dazzling you with a magnificent breathtaking landscape, which you can also admire from one of the viewpoints nearby.
10 – River Beach of Cardigos, in Mação…
It is, from this list of river beaches, the one with the most human hand, but that does not mean that it is also very beautiful. It has a shady lawn area and an area with a small sand where you will find beach facilities, with straw hats and other facilities, such as barbecue grills and picnic park.
To visit with family or friends, it also has a lifeguard, which guarantees more safety to this type of beach.
