On the 10th of June is celebrated the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities.
A national holiday, this date pays tribute to the great poet Luís Vaz de Camões, author of “Os Lusíadas”, the greatest epic work in Portugal, who died on June 10, 1580.
The Dia de Portugal program includes many activities, such as parades, military demonstrations, and awarding of merit medals, for example.
This is also considered the day of the Portuguese language and the national citizen.
History of Portugal Day...
During the dictatorial regime of the Estado Novo from 1933 until the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, June 10 was celebrated as "Race Day”.
After the revolution of April 25, 1974, which marked the end of the Estado Novo's dictatorial regime, the celebration of the day began to pay homage to Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities.
On this day, the President of the Republic and high-ranking individuals from the State participate in ceremonies commemorating the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, which take place in different cities every year. New individuals are distinguished annually for their work on behalf of the nation.
