Every November 11th, Portugal comes alive with the celebration of São Martinho’s Day, a centuries-old tradition that marks the beginning of winter festivities. Deeply intertwined with roasted chestnuts and the sampling of young wine, the day is celebrated with warmth, community, and a nod to history.
As the air turns crisp and the aroma of roasted chestnuts fills the streets, it’s time to gather around the Magusto—a traditional bonfire feast—to honor the changing season.
A Story of Generosity and the Summer of São Martinho
Legend has it that São Martinho (Saint Martin), a Roman soldier, once encountered a freezing beggar while riding his horse on a stormy, cold day. Touched by the man’s plight, he took his sword and split his cloak in half, sharing it with the beggar to provide warmth. A little further along his journey, he met another beggar and, without hesitation, shared the other half of his cloak, leaving himself with no protection from the harsh cold. Despite this selflessness, Martinho continued his journey, fully exposed to the elements.
As the story goes, the moment he displayed such kindness, the storm clouds miraculously parted, and the sun emerged, bringing unseasonably warm weather for three days—what we now call the “Verão de São Martinho” (Saint Martin’s Summer). This phenomenon, often still observed in Portugal with a burst of warm days in November, serves as a reminder of the power of generosity and has become an essential part of the holiday's lore.
Magusto… A Celebration of Chestnuts and New Wine
The Magusto festivities bring together friends and families to roast chestnuts over open flames and enjoy freshly produced wine from the recent harvest. The chestnuts are enjoyed “quentes e boas” (hot and delicious), either roasted over coals or boiled with aromatic herbs like fennel. These gatherings, particularly in the north of Portugal, are an opportunity to enjoy the fruits of the autumn harvest and to keep old traditions alive.
Historical Roots and Culinary Traditions
The connection between São Martinho and chestnuts has roots in the All Saints’ Day celebrations on November 1st. Historically, communities in northern Portugal would light bonfires and feast on chestnuts to honor their ancestors, believing the spirits of the deceased joined them to feel the warmth of the flames and partake in the offerings. By mid-November, chestnuts are abundant, having fallen from their protective burrs, and the first batches of new wine are ready to be tasted, making this the perfect season for this beloved tradition.
The abundance of chestnuts and freshly harvested wine created a lasting cultural legacy, cementing the pairing as a hallmark of São Martinho celebrations.
As we celebrate this rich tradition, we are reminded of Portugal's deep connection to the land, community, and the warmth that simple, shared experiences bring. Whether you find yourself around a Magusto bonfire or savoring the taste of hot chestnuts and young wine, São Martinho’s Day is a beautiful reminder of the season’s blessings and the spirit of giving.
