Buying Property in Algarve - 8 Popular Destinations

Portugal’s Algarve coast is famous for its lively towns and traditional fishing villages, warm climate and stunning beaches. Homebuyers searching for property in the Algarve can choose from port towns like Lagos in the west, to upmarket golf resorts like Vilamoura in the centre, and quieter villages like Tavira in the east.

You can still find resale apartments in the Algarve for under €300,000, but if you’d prefer a modern, eco-designed home in a premium location – popular with many buyers because of the improved rental potential – it’s likely to be closer to €500,000 or more. Luxury villas frequently top €1,000,000.

Albufeira

Once a peaceful fishing village, Albufeira is now the largest resort on the Algarve, as holidaymakers, expats and retirees have flocked to enjoy the sandy beaches and excellent standard of living. The historic Old Town, characterised by pretty cobblestone streets, is more popular with families and children, whilst the New Town attracts a younger crowd.

A two-bed apartment might cost you €299,000, a townhouse €400,000, while a villa with a pool will be over €500,000.

Alvor

With its expansive sands, Alvor is a beach-lover's dream, complemented by top-notch hotels and water sports options like sailing, water skiing, and windsurfing. Alvor's charming fishing village dates back to Moorish times, though today only the historic center and the Manueline-style church hint at its past. For nature lovers, the Alvor Estuary offers a unique ecosystem, providing vital rest points for migratory birds.

Apartments in Alvor start from around €300,000, townhouses from €400,000, and villas from €500,000.

Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is a small, picturesque town nestled into spectacular Algarve cliffs, with a popular beach at its centre. It is located approximately 5km south of Lagoa, and can be reached in 45 minutes from Faro airport.

Apartments in Carvoeiro start from around €300,000, townhouses from €400,000, and villas from €500,000.

Lagos

Expats flock to Lagos, in the Western Algarve, to enjoy its beaches, including famous Meia Praia; the buzzing atmosphere around Lagos marina; and the historic charm of Lagos Old Town - with its cobbled streets and impressive architecture, churches and statues. Lagos also proves popular with overseas investors, as rental properties are in demand and returns are healthy.

A new-build two-bed apartment with communal pool would start from around €400,000; higher-spec three-bed homes close to the Marina more like €650,000; for a villa, prices over €1m are common.

Loulé

Loulé is a traditional market town in the central Algarve, part of the larger municipality of the same name. The town itself is a place to enjoy authentic Portuguese life, with bustling streets, shops and markets - plus historic charms including the castle and church. Loulé provides a refreshing contrast to more tourist-focused destinations like Vilamoura.

Apartments in Loulé start from around €300,000, townhouses from €400,000, and villas from €500,000.

Portimão

Portimão is a popular port town in the Western Algarve. The historic centre has open-air cafes and restaurants, plus there’s a fantastic market, lively waterfront and internationally acclaimed marina. Portimão is well-known by tourists because of the fabulous beach at Praia da Rocha. It's a friendly place with a deep fishing heritage - celebrated by its annual sardine festival.

Apartments here typically start from around €300,000, houses will usually be over €500,000.

Silves

The ancient capital of the Algarve, Silves is a stunning medieval town with a Moorish castle, fortified walls and a maze of cobbled streets. Set in green hills on the banks of the River Arade, Silves is a popular destination to visit but the surrounding countryside, largely given over to citrus groves and cork trees, is popular with year-round residents who prefer a quieter rural way of life.

Townhouses in Silves start from around €400,000, and villas from €500,000.

Tavira

Tavira is a small town in the eastern Algarve, quieter and more laid-back than some of the destinations further west, and offering an inviting glimpse of a more traditional Portugal with cobbled-streets and charming family restaurants.

Apartments in Tavira typically start from around €300,000, townhouses from €400,000 and villas will be over €500,000
